Sleepers

Sleepers refer to cut sections of pressure treated softwood or oak, available in a range of sizes for whatever use case. Sleepers can be used in a variety of applications, especially in a garden environment, as they have been treated to resist any weather condition making them useful for any garden landscaping application.

Sleepers can be used for garden borders, lawn edging or more advanced options such as retaining walls. Sleepers are made up of pressure treated softwood or long lasting oak in sizes ranging from 100 by 299 by 2.4m to 125 by 250 by 2.4m. The sleepers are treated using a state of the art treatment process, which is chromium and arsenic free, this treatment is provided by Arch Lonza offering five use classes referring to the level of treatment.

The installation of sleepers is easy and straight-forward; their sturdy design is able to be installed in almost any environment. The treatment allows them to withstand moisture from the outdoor elements and they can be fastened to other sleepers using regular timber screw fixings, resulting in a straight forward and uncomplicated installation.

When cutting or drilling into sleepers, it is important to treat the newly cut timber before any damage occurs due to outdoor weather conditions, full coverage is required to preserve the sleepers for as long as possible making sure they last for years to come. Timber sleepers provided by a reputable supplier will be constructed using the highest quality softwood or oak, cut precisely to ensure that the product offered is consistent for any scenario.

Barn Feather Edge / Cladding

Barn feather edge cladding is one of the traditional means of cladding a property, especially cladding for a barn application. Barn feather edge cladding is a sawn board of wood cut on the diagonal to create a tapered board that can be overlapped when fitted to a structure, effectively acting as a timber version of roof tiles.

The traditional wood that is used for barn feather edge cladding is oak, however other materials are available that are both durable and popular due to the potential for lower costs. Wood for barn feather edge cladding typically is made up of either oak, western red cedar or larch. All of these wood species are suitable for cladding a structure, being available in various dimensions.

Barn feather edge cladding can also be treated for increased durability for outdoor applications, offering superior protection compared to untreated cladding that has been painted. Treated barn feather edge cladding can also be painted to achieve the look the client requires but is not entirely necessary as the wood can withstand the elements for years and years. Barn feather edge cladding can also be painted prior to installation, making the process of cladding a structure even more straightforward.

Barn feather edge cladding is kiln dried to achieve a level of moisture that is ideal for an exterior cladding application, minimising movement due to shrinkage ensuring that the installation remains durable for as long as possible.

Gate Posts

Gate posts made from strong and reliable timber are created to the highest standard and will provide a sturdy support for any gate solution that will last for many years. Gate posts can be treated to protect against wood rot and other forms of weathering resulting from an outdoor application. Green or brown wood treatment is available, with brown treated timber being marginally more expensive due to the cost of brown dye. Either way, the treatment process will offer a natural wood look that would not suggest that it was pressure treated.

Gate posts are typically made from hardwearing oak, and have a large section compared to other timber applications; ranging from 125 x 125 mm to 200 x 200mm. Most gate posts are usually cut with a 4-way weather top in order to provide a more attractive, finished look. Larger sections of gate posts are very durable and are suitable for heavy duty applications, such as the following: entrance gates, large field gates or ranch gates. Smaller sections are available for smaller use cases, a small pale gate for example.

The sturdy design of gate posts as well as the pressure treatment applied to them results in an installation that will last over five years as a minimum, lasting as long as they are needed. They are able to withstand any outdoor weathering and the strain caused by constant use of a gate.

Dry Boards – ISPM -15 56/30 Heat Treatment

Dry Boards conforming to ISPM-15 standards undergo a critical heat treatment process known as 56/30. This treatment, designed to meet the specifications of the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM-15), involves subjecting wooden boards to a specific temperature and duration. The 56/30 heat treatment typically entails heating the wood to a core temperature of 56 degrees Celsius (about 132.8 degrees Fahrenheit) for a minimum of 30 minutes. This process is crucial for mitigating the risk of transporting and spreading pests through international trade in wooden packaging materials. By ensuring the wood reaches these prescribed temperatures, the treatment effectively eliminates harmful organisms, making the boards compliant with ISPM-15 regulations and suitable for international shipping without posing a threat to global ecosystems.

Unseasoned Boards

Unseasoned boards are ungraded, typically being used in applications such as gravel boards and pallets. Unseasoned boards are offered in sizes of 22×100 or 22×150, 3.6-5.4, which are then available in green or brown treated to order.

Unseasoned boards are usually cut from the log and are used for applications that are not sensitive to timber that is subject to more movement due to the fact it hasn’t been kiln dried – fencing is an example of such an application. Unseasoned boards do not require grading like other types of timber. Unseasoned boards can be treated upon request dependent on the use for the wood; treatments can protect the timber from weathering due to the outdoor elements, allowing it to last for much longer.

Unseasoned boards that has not been graded is not recommended for more structural dependant applications that cannot be subject to substantial levels of movement due to various levels of moisture remaining in the timber. Such applications require a kiln dried solution, which has had most of the moisture removed prior to installation.

Unseasoned boards can either be treated to the green standard or the brown standard. Brown treated timber which is created by adding a brown dye to the mix provides a brown tint rather than a green tint. The choice between the two depends on the look the client wants from the wood; brown treated timber is marginally more expensive due to the cost of the dye.

Decking

Decking is widely used in a variety of scenarios, both domestic and commercial. Timber decking can be treated or untreated, dependent on the planned use for it, and is usually made from either redwood or oak. Decking can utilise either hardwood or softwood, with hardwood being more durable over time as it requires less maintenance. However, softwood timber still has a reasonable level of durability but does require regular maintenance.

Decking is useful for gardens that have uneven ground or damp soil, resulting in a flat surface to walk on that will not be inconvenient or dirty when the outdoor space is in use. A level surface allows for tables and chairs to be used in the space, where they might not have been able to before if the surface was previously uneven.

Decking provides an attractive outdoor environment as it is made from high quality wood that offers a solid surface that is both practical and naturally appealing to the eye. Decking can either be smooth or grooved, depending on the planned use for them. Grooved boards are useful when placed next to a pool or a water feature particularly in short lengths, as it allows water to runoff easily. For longer lengths or drier applications, smooth decking is a sufficient option with no disadvantage in such a scenario.

Installing decking in an outdoor space can revitalise it from a weathered look to a modern and sleek appearance relatively easily, covering marshy soil or cracked concrete.

Site Pegs & Tree Stakes

Site pegs and tree stakes are essential tools in construction, landscaping, and horticulture. Site pegs, crafted from wood, plastic, or metal, serve as markers to delineate specific points or boundaries on a construction site, aiding in precise measurements and layout. These pegs play a crucial role in establishing the foundation for various structures. On the other hand, tree stakes, typically made of wood, metal, or composite materials, provide vital support to young trees. By securing the tree to a stake with ties or straps, these stakes prevent leaning or uprooting, fostering healthy tree growth, particularly in areas prone to strong winds or unstable soil. Whether delineating construction parameters or promoting tree stability, site pegs and tree stakes contribute significantly to the success and longevity of outdoor projects.

Machine Round Not PTD

Machine Round Not PTD refers to a specific type of timber treatment commonly used in the construction and agricultural industries. In the context of fencing and landscaping, “machine round” indicates that the timber has been mechanically shaped into a cylindrical form, providing a smooth and consistent finish. The “Not PTD” designation suggests that the timber has not undergone pressure treatment with preservatives. While pressure-treated wood is often used for outdoor applications to enhance durability and resistance to decay, Machine Round Not PTD timber might be preferred in situations where preservatives are not necessary or when a natural, untreated appearance is desired. This type of timber is versatile and finds use in various applications, including fencing, paddock enclosures, and other outdoor structures.
